| Conceiving and Creating
Ideas: |
| "BRAINSTORMING"
Being unique is important. Brainstorming outloud with
a group is a good way to begin. Simply start talking
about your basic concept. Make a list of ideas in columes
on paper and write down the suggestions that others
offer. As you continue brainstorming the words and phrases
under each heading with start creating their own story.
As you continue to talk pieces will start fitting together.
Select the idea that offers the most possibilities and
then create two or three variations from the same concept.
As the writer, you have the power to create anything
within imagination. If you can think it, you can make
it happen. |
| Be specific
and try several approaches in your concept development.
Begin with a generic idea that sends the creative mind
in a specific direction. Create an approach to your
concept that is totally unique and something never thought
of. If you create two or three variations for the same
concept you will increase your market. And each of those
variations will give you a different result, a different
experience for the market. So don’t be afraid
to work on several projects with the same concept. It
can only increase your chance of making a sale. |
| Need
assistance in development and
writing:
|
| If you
are seeking professional guidance for creating and developing
a project, please contact Donna Setterlund, our founder.
She can help direct you to programs and services related
to the development and marketing of your project. At
Imagination Innovations we will help find answers to
your questions for the creative development of a specific
project. |
| Unsolicited Submissions? |
| In the
writing industry, buyers are cautious of exposing themselves
to a potential lawsuit by blindly accepting a submission
that may conflict with the content of projects they
already have in development. Companies are very protective
of their right to develop a variety of concepts within
any given genre or theme. Imagination Innovations will
use the industry standard material release form that
clarifies liability along with acknowledging there is
no binding agreement unless a written option proposal
is made. The most attractive aspect of our service is
that we present an efficient and growing creative source
pool for the development and packaging of material for
sale. |
| The
Title Tells It All: |
The title
is as important as your concept. It should be easy to
say and create a mental picture of what your writing
about. Playing with words in fun easy to speak phrases
will peak curiosity and grab attention. Your title the
first message to the viewer. It will attract interest
or be immediately forgotten.
I
successful project must have a great title! |
| Choose A Marketable
Subject: |
| Titles
are very important, but the concept you base your story
on should be developed around a genre that is popular
in the market. Know your subject. If you don't understand
your subject, how can you write about it? To write a
story for a second grade reader you must use peanut
butter and jelly language. Do your research. Learn what
is hot and what is not. |
| Do
I Need An Agent? |
Agents have the ability
to match projects with players, and most are in a position
to give clients the attention needed to market successfully.
They already have industry connections or are currently
working as writers. However, they are good at managing
careers, not starting them. For a beginning writer,
place your projects with people that can get exposure.
After you have interest for your project and receive
a legitimate proposal, bring in an entertainment attorney
to negotiate and close the deal. A lawyer won't take
a percentage of your sales like an agent. They usually
charge a basic fee plus take a small percentage of the
deal. Once you're a working writer with a portfolio
of projects in development, then a full time agent is
importantly, the Agent will need you and you will support
each other. |
| What
is the best way to package and market my project? |
| Having
a complete manuscript will help a project along in development
and give a better example of the projects potential.
However, before a producer will invest time in reading
the entire script or treatment, you must generate interest.
Unless you are able to concentrate your story or program
format into a brief synopsis with a highly marketable
"logline", a producer will never invest the
time and there is no chance of the project being produced.
The foundation of any project's success is built on
the ability of the executives and producers to communicate
the project efficiently throughout the development process.
A busy executive will never invest
the time in reading a full manuscript if they aren't
interested in the basic concept or premise of the material.
The sale is in the originality and power of the concept,
and that is where an executive will see it's potential.
At Imagination Innovations we help the writer bring
their project to this form of presentation, and provide
the industry executives with exactly their preferred
method of reviewing materials for development and sale. |
| How
Do I Protect My Property? |
| You can register
your Manuscript with Imagination Innovations for a time-stamped
and archived record of your original writing. We will
also help you register your work with the Writers Guild
of America. You will then print your assigned "ImIn
Number" and WGA Number on all work posted or submitted
for marketing. Whenyou work with Imagination Innovations,
we will keep a paper copy of all submissions and correspondences
with any company we contact. Most importantly, don't forget
that copyright law only protects the unique expression
of intellectual property. Concentrate on creating original
ideas that are unlike any existing material. |
| LOGLINES |
| The Short Pitch
! A "Logline" is a one or two sentence description
that tells the basic concept of your story. This is the
catalyst for increasing the odds of selling a manuscript
or idea . |
| What is a TREATMENT?
(Synopsis, Outline) |
| A detailed
description of your project or story. (Usually 1 to
5 pages in length).
It's important to be efficient with your descriptions,
yet give enough information to provoke interest.
Show the reader what we are watching.
There is no “right” way to form a TV pitch
for the various reality-based and scripted genres in
television. However, there are standard formats that
helps the buyer see more clearly what your idea is,
and it’s potential. When you work with Imagination
Innovations we will help you develop the most productive
presentation for your project. |
| Advice & Strategy: |
| A new writer
entering the writing world must have a good example
of work. Agents need these samples to present and producers
need to see that the writer can create a story idea
and complete a project. Its fine if the writer has several
Treatments for different concepts and genres. Agents
typically require their clients to have 2 sample spec
manuscripts. Writing a side-splitting sample can capture
a very specific style and format, but when you're selling
yourself as a writer you'll want to widen your scope
and deliver broader samples from dramatic to comedy. |
| Creative Workshops: |
| Imagination
Innovations will offer a variety of workshops featuring
published writers and industry professionals. We will
also connect you to other opportunities.
- Example: For over 30 years, the Warner
Bros. Television Writers’ Workshop has been
the premier writing program for new writers looking
to start and further their career in the world of
television. Every year, the Workshop selects up to
10 participants out of almost 1,000 submissions and
exposes them to Warner Bros.
